About Repoly
Built to answer one question: when replacing a proprietary product with something open source or self-hosted, which option is actually maintained?
Star counts alone do not answer that. A project with 40,000 stars and no commit in a year is a worse bet than one with 2,000 stars and a release last month.
Who runs it
Repoly is built and maintained by FlyMe Studio. Health scores are computed automatically from repository data every night; the comparison introductions, "best for" picks and guides are written and checked by our team.
What is listed
Our directory currently tracks 1346 tools across 95 categories, of which 834 score as actively maintained. Entries are seeded from the community-maintained awesome-selfhosted and open-source-alternatives lists, then extended by our own research. Every tool links to its own repository and licence, and the full dataset is published as JSON on the open data page under the terms described in attribution.
How ranking works
Every tool gets a health score from 0 to 100, computed nightly from public repository data on GitHub, GitLab or Codeberg: commits in the last 90 days, recency of the latest release, stars on a log scale, whether the repository is archived, and whether it ships a Docker image. The formula and its weights are printed in full on the data page, and our methodology covers sources, refresh and how tools are added. Health is the only sorting signal on the site. Nothing else, paid or otherwise, moves a tool up or down.
How it is funded
Three ways, all labelled where they appear, and none touches our rankings. The "Run it" block on tool pages may contain affiliate links to hosting providers, with the disclosure printed inside the block. The top bar and a corner card carry one labelled affiliate offer, matched to the page's topic where we have one, such as a VPN beside the VPN comparisons. A small number of sponsor slots carry a SPONSORED strip and are never shown as a top pick. Sponsors must be open-source or self-hosting-adjacent products. Details are on the advertise page.
What it does not do
No accounts, no cookies, no third-party trackers. Aggregate page counts come from cookieless Umami. The full policy is on the privacy page.
