How many open-source tools are still maintained?
91.3% of them. Of the 1,230 open-source, self-hosted tools whose repository we can measure, 1,123 had at least one commit in the last 90 days and are not archived. The rest have gone quiet, at least for now. Every figure below is recomputed each night from the same data behind our rankings.

Health bands
Maintained, slowing or stale
Our health score runs from 0 to 100: commits in the last 90 days count most, then release recency, stars, archive status and Docker support. The median measured tool scores 84. The formula is published in full.
- Good (70 and above): 834 tools, 67.8%
- Slowing (40 to 69): 297 tools, 24.1%
- Stale (below 40): 99 tools, 8%
Releases tell a similar story: 74.8% published a tagged release in the last 180 days, while 11.9% have no tagged release we can find at all, which usually means they ship from the main branch or a container image. 59.8% publish a Docker image or Compose file.
By category
Which kinds of software are best maintained
Share of measured tools in each category with a commit in the last 90 days, for the 62 categories with at least 8 measured tools. Each category links to its full ranking.
Stars are not maintenance
Popular projects that have gone quiet
Tools with more than 5,000 stars that are archived, or that have had no commit and no push of any kind in the last 90 days. A large following says people cared once; it says nothing about whether anyone is fixing bugs today.

Method
How we measured
The catalogue is 1,346 open-source and self-hosted tools from the awesome-selfhosted list. Each night we read every repository we can reach: 1,134 on GitHub and 96 on GitLab, Codeberg and other Gitea or Forgejo forges. The remaining 116 have no public repository we can read, so they are left out of every share on this page. "Active" means at least one commit in the last 90 days and not archived. Data last refreshed today.
The full dataset is one JSON file under CC BY-SA 3.0: download it, or read the formula and sources. To cite this page: Repoly, "How many open-source tools are still maintained?", repoly.dev/state-of-open-source/, Oct 2026.
Common questions
How many open-source self-hosted tools are actively maintained?
Of the 1,230 tools whose repository we can measure, 1,123 (91.3%) had at least one commit in the last 90 days and are not archived. 834 (67.8%) score 70 or above on our health scale, and 99 (8%) score below 40.
Which kinds of open-source software are best maintained?
Among categories with at least 8 measured tools, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has the largest share of active projects (100% of 14) and URL Shorteners the smallest (63.6% of 11). The full table is on this page.
Does a high star count mean a project is maintained?
No. 9 tools with more than 5,000 stars are archived or have had no commit and no push in the last 90 days, led by PocketBase with 62k stars. Stars count past interest; commits and releases show current maintenance, which is why our score weighs commits most.
